The dogs I work with generally all have one thing in common - they're misunderstood by their owner.
Owners often try everything to remedy an undesirable behaviour but don't find the right solution. Often that's because owners head straight for a behaviour remedy for a particular problem rather than addressing why their dog does what s/he does. If we just address a single behaviour without understanding the dog first, we'll often find the dog simply moves on to another undesirable behaviour and the cycle starts again. The result is an owner trying lots of methods which lack consistency and cause confusion.
This cycle can be overcome by focussing on mutual understanding and clear communication. For a dog to be happy in our world, it must have a stable, peaceful, routine environment and owners must try to see themselves as striving to be a good parent rather than a good friend. Therefore, I teach owners how to establish a different type of relationship with their dog - one that is based on respect from both sides.
